Introduction

We use our hands for many purposes in our daily lives such as eating, dressing, writing and typing. We also use our hand to feel, explore and perform many complex tasks which require manipulation skills. All our hand movements involve different combinations of motions of the joints, tendons and muscles of the hand.

Hand surgeons use surgical & non-surgical methods to treat different conditions and problems that may occur anywhere from the fingertips to the shoulder. Some such conditions include old/existing injuries, birth defects, growth abnormalities, tumours, nerve compression and arthritic joints. Hand surgeons employ microsurgical techniques in re-attachment of amputated limbs and in some hand reconstructions.

Hand Therapy

Hand therapy uses specially-designed exercises and activities to help you resume normal use of your hand after undergoing treatment.

Therapy sessions are important as they track your recovery and enable your therapist to recommend any changes to your programme when necessary.

To achieve maximum recovery, you are encouraged to cooperate with your surgeon and therapist to understand your therapy programme and practise it at home.
